Horse riding promises to be a fun and exciting experience. Apart from the excitement, riding requires a high degree of courage as well as skill which can only be learned through practice. In order to achieve his aspiration, Mohd Bakri Abdul Razak opened the Highlanders Endurance at Kampung Janda Baik, Pahang. According to Mohd Bakri, outdoor enthusiasts can truly enjoy feelings of satisfaction as horsemen when riding in an open area and feel the real ability of the horses that they ride at Highlanders Endurance. Riders who are keen on endurance riding must have full control of the basic skills and ability to handle a horse in various situations as well as having a good understanding between rider and horse.
Mohd Bakri said that endurance riding activity is more dangerous and should be attempted by experienced riders only unlike recreational riding. Riders must understand the actions and habits of the horse that he is riding. A rider who forces a horse to gallop or work hard can cause injuries that can cripple the horse for life. Mohd Bakri has 24 horses of various breeds, namely Indonesian, Argentinean and Arabian whereby eight of them are specially trained for endurance riding. According to the Highlanders Endurance Trainer, 43-year old Yazman Madewnus, endurance riding across rugged hills and streams require riding experience in order to ensure the safety of riders. Having 10 years of riding experience, he informs that riders should know to maintain a safe distance from one another in order to avoid infringement because some horses are sensitive and shy.
Some preparations have to be made usually by a blacksmith before starting a ride. The process begins by fixing a horse shoe, trimming the nails and putting the saddle on the horseback. Only then, the rider is given the opportunity to approach and get to know the horse that is to be ridden besides stroking it. Every rider must take the horse for a warm-up in an indoor track or paddock. The warm-up session is to test the skills and compatibility of rider with the selected horse. This session is compulsory before the rider is allowed to take the horse out of the paddock. This is because riders who fail to control their horses in the paddock are never allowed to mount in an endurance ride since the horse tends to be more aggressive when outside the stable.
According to Yazman Madewnus, horse riding not only improves fitness but also provides satisfaction to the rider after taming the horse and riding it well. (Last Update: 14 June 2011)
